Saba Energy Sector Strategy Support
A special municipality of the Netherlands, the Caribbean island of Saba is highly reliant on fuel imports for transport and the production of electricity. Aimed at reducing this reliance, as well as decreasing exposure to fuel price volatility and enhancing the local economy by lowering electricity costs, the Saba Energy Sector Strategy 2020–2025 was adopted, with the overarching goal to achieve 60 percent energy sector sustainability by 2025.
The European Commission selected our team to assist Saba, with the assessment of the progress made during the timeframe 2020–2024 in the implementation of the Energy Sector Strategy. We analyzed data around their energy production and consumption, emissions, financial performance, and infrastructure projects. We also identified challenges and bottlenecks in budget support strategies. In light of this, we supported the development of Saba’s new Energy Sector Strategy for 2025–2030, consulting with interested parties and defining timelines, responsibilities and performance indicators. Additionally, we campaigned for the promotion of equal opportunities for women and men in technical education in the high schools on the island, further supporting inclusivity in the clean transition.
Through these efforts, Saba has strengthened their energy infrastructure while enhancing the island’s security, efficiency, and climate resilience.
