Protecting Togo’s natural heritage and empowering communities to tackle climate change

Togo Climate Action and Biodiversity Conservation Support

A flagship initiative funded by the European Union, the Programme to Support the Fight Against Climate Change, the Protection of Biodiversity and Agroecology (PALCC+) aims to strengthen climate resilience and promote sustainable development in Togo. At its core, the program focuses on conserving biodiversity, restoring ecosystems, and fostering an economy that values environmental stewardship. PALCC+ is intended to accelerate its impact through the creation of National Offices for Protected Areas (ONAPs), scaling up ecosystem restoration, and promoting agroecological practices.

As part of the consortium implementing this project, our team provided technical assistance to the Togolese Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources to enact this ambitious agenda across key landscapes, including Fazao-Malfakassa and Togodo-Mono. We contributed to developing a comprehensive action plan and managing monitoring and tracking systems for protected areas and avifauna to establish baseline data for biodiversity. Our collaborative workshops, community engagement activities, and targeted missions also supported institutional reforms like setting up ONAPs and advancing digital solutions for forest and biodiversity monitoring. We also amplified visibility of PALCC+ through communication campaigns and mobilized communities around climate and conservation goals.
