Aaqqigiarvik Correctional Healing Centre Design

The Government of Nunavut’s Aaqqigiarvik Correctional Healing Centre is a 105-bed, multi-designated correctional facility in Iqaluit, focused on healing the legacy of residential schools. Intentionally named Aaqqigiarvik—a place for help to make progress in life—the Government of Nunavut intends for the new and renovated facilities to do just that.

We provided architecture and buildings engineering services for this project. Our design incorporates the Department of Justice mandate for healing by taking design queues from Nunavut culture and the local environment. We created a serene, light filled space that protects the community while providing inmates with greater sense of dignity and more supportive path for moving forward.

The project was a phased addition to and renovation of the existing Baffin Correctional Centre, with a physical link to the minimum secure facility adjacent. An outbuilding specifically for On the Land Programs forms a crucial part of this overall campus that is further integrated with a secure exterior courtyard.
