Preparing for the future of transportation in Alberta and beyond
Partnered with the University of Alberta, Stantec worked with the Centre for Smart Transportation to help create Canada’s first Connected Vehicle Testbed. Launched in 2014, this testbed now features 70+ road side units, and provides real-world test zones in three congested corridors, a rural freeway, an urban expressway, and an urban arterial, combined with laboratory settings where conditions can be customized to simulate various situations. The central traffic management lab acts as a control hub, allowing observations, data collection, and device configuration from a central location. Operating in a cold-weather climate has allowed the hardware to be tested in harsh winter conditions.
These facilities offer cutting-edge learning opportunities and coaching for the next generation of transportation experts. Applications tested within this network include road safety alerts, pedestrian detection alerts, vehicle-to-vehicle safety messaging, and transit priority signal control. The testbed is continually expanding to allow testing of the new hardware, incorporation of new standards in cybersecurity and communication protocols, and the development of new software applications. Partnerships and support from the industry, and from all three levels of government have allowed this project to be an award-winning success.
By providing project management, planning, design, procurement, and construction administration services, Stantec is quickly becoming a leader in the development and testing of this groundbreaking technology.
