Airdrie Transportation Master Plan Update

Transportation network planning for a rapidly growing municipality

  • Airdrie, Alberta

    Airdrie, Alberta

Airdrie established transportation priorities for the next 20 years with a strong engagement plan endeavoring to hear every voice

Airdrie is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada; this means more traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians. The City’s Transportation Master Plan (TMP) update needed to extend beyond transportation challenges—rapid growth meant even recently drafted maps of the area would become out-of-date in a one- to two-year time span.

The new TMP aligns with the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board (CMRB) regional transportation model and provides a fine-grain analysis of how City infrastructure can evolve to meet the needs of residents and the region. Our team developed a macro-model to evaluate how future development is expected to impact roadways. This was combined with a micro-model to evaluate intersection level operations—generating scenarios with the touch of a button, efficiently identifying improvements to manage future traffic volumes. We took a strategic stakeholder engagement approach involving initiatives such as public and online engagement, presentations to the City’s Leadership Team, and feedback from City departments.

A focus on active modes connectivity highlights the City’s aspirations of being a Blue Zone community that prioritizes healthy choices, with a goal of being Canada’s Healthiest City. With the support of the stakeholder input to back our technical analysis, the TMP became an exemplary project for Airdrie—the most engaged they’ve ever done.
