Designing an inclusive, multisensory, universally accessible children’s park

Albert-Schweitzer Park Redevelopment

The City of Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville wanted to make the Albert-Schweitzer Park an inclusive playground where all children could have fun, regardless of their physical or intellectual abilities. Looking to integrate a zone for play and socialization in accordance with the requirements of universal accessibility, while enhancing the playfulness of the installations, the City engaged us to help update the park.

Our civil engineering and landscape architecture teams joined forces in every stage of the project, from design to supervision of the landscaping work—carefully choosing accessible playground components to emphasize colorful, multisensory features. For children with limited mobility or other disabilities, we designed one play area for toddlers and another for children aged five to 12. We also created an area with classic and adapted swings, as well as spaces in the park where children can socialize or find a more tranquil spot away from the bustle of the playground. Additionally, our design integrates walkways into the existing layout, allowing anyone using strollers, wheelchairs, or other mobility devices to move freely throughout the park. And when it rains, we designed all these playground features to effectively manage rainwater.

Today, this Albert-Schweitzer Park is an inclusive park that offers all pre-school and elementary school children an accessible and adapted place where they can have fun with their friends and play safely.
