Anticosti Island and Basse-Côte-Nord Region Ferry Service Assessment

For several years, the M/V Bella Desgagnés has been transporting goods, vehicles, and people to Anticosti Island and the isolated villages of the Basse-Côte-Nord region in Quebec. As part of the ferry service contract renewal, the Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) wanted to better understand the needs of the local population in order to improve their services. STQ commissioned Groupe Mobilité Basse-Côte-Nord, of which Stantec is a member, to carry out an assessment of the current ferry service.

In addition to conducting an online survey, our transportation team traveled to the area to hold on-site public consultations in 10 communities across the vast coastal region. Our team also spent a week aboard the vessel to gain firsthand insight into the realities of its operations, while comparing the service to other providers operating elsewhere in North America.

The results of this assessment study will help STQ understand their current ferry service in Anticosti Island and the Basse-Côte Nord region and determine how commuters’ needs may have evolved over time to optimize future service in the area.
