The award-winning Arrow Lakes Generating Station added 185MW of clean, renewable energy seven months ahead of schedule

Similar to many locations on existing rivers around the world, the Hugh Keenleyside Dam, which was built for other benefits, represented an opportunity for the development of sustainable power. As a partner on the design-build team, we handled civil, structural, geotechnical, geological, hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and architectural services as engineer of record for the new 185-megawatt (MW) powerhouse project downstream from the Dam. 

The complex project included several key components designed by our hydropower and dam experts including a single monolith powerhouse that houses two vertical axis Kaplan turbines, a 1.4-kilometre-long channel excavated through overburden and rock on the north side of the existing dam, a 25-metre tall concrete-faced rockfill dam on the south side of the approach channel, and a tailrace rock channel. 

The project, which received the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Engineering Excellence from the Consulting Engineers of British Columbia (the highest award given by that body), was successfully completed with the first of the two units producing green renewable power approximately seven months ahead of schedule.
