A fish-friendly pumphouse designed to reduce risk and increase efficiency
Special consideration is always taken when our people work with natural resources and wildlife. When we were asked to design a new pumphouse and modify the existing river water intake system that services Alberta’s Industrial Heartland near Fort Saskatchewan, our team was ready. With approval from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, we got to work.
Using a computational fluid dynamics model, we refined the pumphouse design to increase efficiency, reduce operational risk, and protect any fish that might travel through the system from the North Saskatchewan River. Travelling screens and a fish return system was installed to ensure fish are returned to the river unharmed, while avoiding potential interruptions in flow resulting from accumulation of ice on the screens at the intake.
New 600 millimetre diameter conductor pipes were installed in a hand-dug tunnel to draw water from the existing intake increasing the pumping system capacity to 78 million liters per day. Our team also developed a 3D model during detail design to help identify potential conflicts – a model that will continue to be used by our client during facility operations.
To support operations of the pumps, we designed the program for the Allen Bradley ControlLogix PLC and built the graphics for the Proface human machine interface.
