A building designed to embrace heritage and connect communities

Passionate about the community and the recent completion of their London Plan, the City of London has focused their renewal on urban design. In a housing market increasingly driven by multi-residential infill, accomplishing good urban design requires making the right moves for scale, massing, and heritage preservation.

We played a central role in the design of the 29-storey Azure Condominium tower by making the development responsive and sensitive to its context despite being built using an economical materials palette. The tower is clad in lightly-toned precast concrete and has distinct masonry bays that conceal an above-grade parking structure. Adjacent to a church, a heritage courtyard serves as a place of reflection and will feature heritage plaques, gardens, and street furniture for sitting and congregating. Retail stores along Talbot Street activate the streetscape, creating a welcoming pedestrian environment.

Our urban design approach included a suite of distinct but intentional moves that set the building in harmony with its surroundings. The tower will make a strong contribution to London’s urban fabric, and as a city-building project, the development will bring an influx of new residents to downtown, adding to London’s urban resurgence.
