Smart grid applications

The Deltro Energy Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was designed for smart grid applications to optimize energy balance demand in smart grids to reduce or defer the overall costs of grid investment and power dispatch.

We were retained by PCL Constructors and Deltro Energy Inc. for two Toronto-based projects. These projects were comprised of 4MW utilizing Leclanché lithium ion batteries, WS Tech power conversion systems and the Greensmith Energy Management System (GEMS). We designed the complete site servicing plan, building facility design (including the unique cooling requirements for the batteries), civil grading and drainage works, structural foundations, electrical equipment layout and complete electrical system studies to support connection of the BESS sites into the Toronto Hydro substation.

The program involved extensive stakeholder coordination between many parties including Toronto Hydro, the Conservation Authority, the IESO as well as Deltro Energy and its EPC partners to ensure delivery of advanced grid support services with minimal impact to the community and environment.
