Safety in numbers—unifying first responder facilities in Blackfalds
The Protective Services Building is nestled between the Queen Elizabeth II Highway and the heart of Blackfalds, establishing the start of a gateway into the town. The building will accommodate the Town of Blackfalds RCMP Detachment, Rural RCMP and community peace officers, as well as the Town of Blackfalds Fire Department.
The detachment contains a cell block with four secure cells, as well as space for community policing, administration support space, garage bays, secure exhibit space, and a meeting room. The fire department has three apparatus bays with potential for future expansion, administrative space, storage and training areas. Common areas for occupants include an exercise room, training room, and a kitchen/lounge. Provision has been made to accommodate fire personnel training both on the roof of the building and within a large green space on the site.
The building includes sustainable design features such as low VOC materials, efficient mechanical and electrical design, a highly reflective roof membrane, water efficient landscaping, and low flow water fixtures. The exterior facade was developed using common themes that the Town of Blackfalds has adopted for other municipal buildings. An effort was made to provide a consistent appearance through the introduction of common materials while still giving the new facility its own identity.
