Before anything can be built, valuable material had to be removed and measured—accurately and fairly

Before the Blatchford Field site could be developed into a marquee new neighborhood, the former airport’s runways needed to be removed. The city asked us to provide cost-control and assurance during the sub-contracted removal of the runway surface and sub-surfaces, which was being paid for based on volume.

The challenge in taking an independent measure of the material stockpiled during the removal was to collect and provide the survey data at a manageable cost. The massive amount of material from several runways created large piles that were not safe for on-the-ground analysis. Enter our fixed-wing, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system.

Using the UAV system in conjunction with ground control points established with RTK GNSS equipment, we were able to survey the stockpiles in less than half the time a conventional survey would have required—and we did it more safely. By using ground control, we ensured that data could be compared in the future across the site as the volumes of stockpiles changed.

Our services provided the city with a measure of cost control over a crucial early part of the Blatchford project and assured city leaders that they were getting a fair deal from their sub-contractors.
