Completing the design for 29.2-megawatt wind farm project

Located in central Alberta—near the Saskatchewan border—the Bull Creek Wind Farm provides power for the Provost and Wainwright communities.

Our team of designers completed the 29.2-megawatt wind farm project, which involved two separate groups of wind turbine generators—on separate electrical collection circuits—each with their own point of interconnection on separate 25-kilovolt distribution feeders. We completed the grounding, short-circuit, coordination, arc-flash, load-flow and stability, harmonic analysis, insulation coordination, DC load, and pipeline corrosion studies.

The line from the grid interconnection to the turbines was all underground. There were two sets of turbines with their own interconnection points—and each interconnection had a small control building installed. The two sets of turbines were connected with an underground fiber and the overall installed collector system was around 25 kilometers long.

Our team was responsible for all electrical detail design including the 25-kilovolt collector system, interconnection, revenue metering, islanding detection, and transfer trip to the AltaLink substation.
