Taking a thoughtful approach to arrest holding facility design

The Calgary Police Service needed to replace their existing arrest processing unit to bring it up to standards for security and safety of users. Based on our long history working with the Calgary Police Service and our involvement of planning the proposed building, our team was selected to create the design that would bring this facility to life.

The new Spyhill Services Centre replaces the existing, aging arrest processing centre with an efficient and modern facility. Through modern strategies for housing detainees of various genders, ages, and security classifications, this facility incorporates a multidisciplinary approach to mental health, holistic program delivery, humane conditions including daylighting, noise control, and access to fresh air. It also has dynamic security, including increased visual site lines, advanced security system design, cell technology, and has sustainable design. The layout is governed primarily by the security and classification of detainees to be housed and the building envelope is energy efficient, consisting primarily of insulated precast panels and curtain wall to balance bright interior spaces with thermal performance and durability.

Designed to prevent self-harm and provide a safe environment for both officers and detainees, the now complete facility provides expanded arrest processing capacity for the Calgary Police Service.
