CarbonStrike - Carbon Capture Technology Pilot Design

When Petronas developed their patent-pending hollow-fiber membrane and solvent technology Tru-Solv to improve the carbon capture process, they needed a pilot design that would reduce the overall capital expenditure (CapEx) cost of post-combustion carbon capture. They reached out to our team to help create the next step in carbon capture technology.

Combining waterfall and agile project execution styles, we collaborated with Petronas to explore ideas for an integrated container that combines multiple carbon capture processes. The design breaks away from traditional standards for oil and gas, handling the lower-pressure processes associated with carbon capture while focusing on key components that add to cost.

The resulting membrane box contactor (MBC) is a compact, modular, and mass-producible shell. It uses approximately 80 percent less metal by weight than traditional amine-based systems and dramatically reduces the footprint required for on-site post-combustion carbon capture processes.

The MBC combines low-pressure ducting, direct-contact cooling, membrane absorption, inlet and exhaust stacks, and associated piping and cables into one integrated shop-built package. These features reduce field work, simplify connectivity, and deliver superior capture performance.

Petronas’ CarbonStrike uses patented membrane and patent-pending solvent technologies, contained in the MBC design, to reduce CapEx on carbon capture by 30-40 percent while saving space and reducing emissions. With lighter weight, smaller footprint, easy assembly, and top carbon capture rates, the CarbonStrike post-combustion system can be easily retrofitted into existing plants or connected to new facilities.
