As their population grows, the City of Surrey is expanding access to medical education, healthcare, childcare, and employment opportunities in the rapidly evolving downtown core. Partnering with Simon Fraser University (SFU), the City wanted to create a mixed-use development that will become home to the SFU Stephens Family School of Medicine, Western Canada's first new medical school in nearly 60 years.
They selected Stantec in partnership with Revery to deliver the first phase of the urban redevelopment project. Our services include architectural design, electrical engineering, lighting, information and communications technology (ICT), sustainability, acoustics, and building envelope engineering. We are also overseeing the interior fit-out for City of Surrey and SFU spaces.
Located on a prominent 1.4-hectare (3.5-acre) site beside Surrey Central Station and SFU's Surrey campus, the 12-story mixed-use building comprising the first phase will provide a permanent home for Western Canada’s first new medical school in almost 60 years. The approximately 51,100 square metres (550,000 square feet) of space will support academic, health, commercial, workplace, and community uses.
Seven floors will be dedicated to the School of Medicine, housing classrooms, research laboratories, administrative offices, and a public family clinic where students can gain hands-on experience serving the community. The building will also include approximately 8,270 square metres (89,000 square feet) of leasable office space and a childcare facility with about 50 seats.
When completed in 2030, Centre Block Phase One will strengthen Surrey's downtown and support the city's long-term growth while creating a destination for learning, research, work, and community life next to one of the region's key transit hubs.
