Chilliwack Airport Runway Extension Project
The Chilliwack Airport is a hub for local emergency response teams of all kinds as they travel to and from high-pressure and time-sensitive scenarios. When the City of Chilliwack needed to extend the runway and upgrade electrical services to better accommodate their first responders, they engaged us to help.
We provided civil airfield and electrical design for the planned extension. This will increase the distance on both runway ends and upgrade lighting and signage through improved electrical services. Before beginning the design for the airfield, our team conducted studies to assess the length at which the runway pavement is to be extended—based on guidelines that determine what the maximum height of objects around the airport can be. We did this based on the Aerodrome Standards and Recommended Practices—TP 312 4th edition. Additionally, we studied the benefits of a runway strip and runway end safety area as part of the runway extension. We used the results of these studies to inform our design for extending the runway and the electrical upgrade.
Phase one of this extension project consists of the project’s electrical upgrade portion. Once construction is complete, the runway extension design will lay the groundwork for a future project as funding becomes available—helping Chilliwack’s first responders improve their emergency response capability.
