From steel wall failure to establishing sustainable infrastructure planning measures
On an escarpment-climbing road in Hamilton, Ontario, a section of the failing Claremont Access retaining wall collapsed—causing a landslide to tumble towards a rockfall fence in a catchment area. The fence prevented it from reaching the highway, but the retaining wall needed repair to keep the slope and the road safe. The City of Hamilton engaged us to complete a geotechnical drilling investigation in support of the slope stability analysis.
Based on discussions with the City, we began this two-part project with a drilling investigation and slope monitoring, followed by a stability analysis and development of remedial options. Our work also included borehole televiewer survey and dilatometer testing and development of a monitoring program for the slope and existing steel walls in support of planned wall removal. The geotechnical study was completed to meet the City’s requirements, in accordance with relevant federal and provincial geotechnical guidelines and regulations.
We supported the project by preparing a geotechnical assessment report, summarizing the results of the stability analysis and rockfall evaluation, and recommendations for next steps. The work for Claremont Access continues—a tender and construction phase will come at a later date.
