Expanding an old hockey arena into a dynamic community hub full of activity, energy, and vitality
We set out to help the City of Edmonton in implementing a key part of their new master plan—the Clareview Community Recreation Centre (CCRC). As part of the efforts to rejuvenate the City of Champion’s northside, we would design a state-of-the-art complex to provide expanded recreation, library, and community support services. The goal? Use a holistic approach to promote community engagement and human connection.
Offering our mechanical, civil, and LEED engineering services—and in collaboration with Teeple Architects—we transformed an old, heavily-used dual arena into an all-inclusive community center. Complete with an aquatic center, fitness center, multi-purpose rooms, and outdoor sports spaces, we designed the CCRC for visitors of all ages. Beyond recreation use, we integrated a public library, a performance stage, a childcare center, community meeting rooms, and a new Catholic high school completion center.
In coordination with the Clareview District Park Development plan, the outdoor space includes several sports fields, ball diamonds, a spray park, and trails. With sustainable and operational affordability in mind, our team also made sure to address several urban conditions—we created safe connections between the surrounding neighborhood and the nearby LRT public transit stations and schools.
Thanks to a series of collaborative workshops, our team was able to design a facility that satisfied the surrounding community, the stakeholders, and the city. The result? A first-of-its-kind facility in North Edmonton.
