Cogeneration - Foothills Medical Centre

Preparing for the industry-changing addition of the Calgary Cancer Centre

Saving $4.5 million and avoiding 4,000 tonnes of CO2 emission, equals huge success

The Foothills Medical Centre needed additional boiler capacity to maintain power plant reliability, and to plan for the new Calgary Cancer Centre. At the same time, the 1970’s vintage back-pressure steam turbine power generators needed expensive repairs—we stepped in to help.

We were retained to evaluate the existing steam cogeneration system’s cost effectiveness, and to examine several options for expanding cogeneration at the power plant. Our study identified several cogeneration options, which provided a positive return on investment. The best of the options identified can provide over 70% of the site’s power requirements at $4.5 million per year lower total cost, while simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions by 4,000 tonnes per year. To top it off, this option also improves this acute care facility’s resiliency against utility system disruptions.

The result? We provided Foothills Medical Centre with options that will keep the plant running reliably at a lower cost than ever before.
