Innovative, efficient, and sustainable water treatment solutions

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) provides regional water supply to the residents of Courtenay, Comox, and the K’omoks First Nation. Since 2014, the unfiltered system suffered from numerous boil water advisories. To solve the problem, CVRD commenced their largest-ever infrastructure project, planning for the construction of new water supply and treatment facilities—the Comox Valley Water Treatment Project.

A modern water treatment system is now in operation, meeting all regulatory standards and providing safe drinking water to local residents. The new facilities were delivered in record time. Even with the construction for the design-build contract starting shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Stantec/Aecon team delivered the project using a design build delivery approach within the 30-month schedule. Improvements were made to all components of the Comox Valley water treatment system and now include three-levels of treatment, reduced turbidity by filtration, and inactivation of viruses and bacteria from the drinking water. The treatment plant includes filtration, ultraviolet, and chlorination disinfection—putting it in line with provincial requirements. The new treatment plant is supplied by a deep tunnel into Comox Lake and a new raw water pump station which pumps the raw water to the plant for treatment.

The Comox Valley Water Treatment System now provides a secure supply of reliable, high-quality drinking water for decades to come.
