Our client asked us to perform a pre-start health and safety review (PSHSR) on their Multiline Optical Character Reader (MLOCR) processing equipment at numerous locations across Canada. Our job was to identify deficiencies and outline mitigation actions. The aim was compliance with relevant machine guarding provisions of CSA Z432-04, Safeguarding of Machinery.
We performed the reviews on site and provided a full report detailing our findings and recommendations for corrective actions for each location. These reports included review of potential equipment system hazards (mechanical, electrical, etc.), guarding, safety interlocks, and emergency-stops.
Risk assessments were also conducted at each location with the local risk assessment team, including management and union representation. These assessments helped identify hazards on MLOCR equipment, evaluated risks, and determined suitable corrective action—the focus of which was on eliminating hazards by design.
With our understanding of machine guarding codes and legislation and past experience with PSHSR—along with familiarity with the client’s processes and equipment—we were able to deliver a clear picture of what the client needed to be safe and compliant.
