Data Science and Machine Learning Advisory

With growing demand for electricity, new customer technologies being adopted, and aging infrastructure, utilities require innovative approaches to their grid and assets. To manage their assets, a utility client developed internal machine learning models, ranging from asset management to distribution planning to data improvement use cases—but they wanted a third party to support improvements to these models and help with knowledge transfer. They engaged us to help.

To support the client’s ongoing analytics program, our Strategic Advisory Services team provided data science and machine learning support to utility staff during the development of a variety of use cases. Our team acted in an advisory capacity, working directly with the utility client’s technical personnel. We provided support for developing the data pipeline, selecting an appropriate algorithm, verifying model performance, and enterprise system integration. We supported use cases that included electric vehicle (EV) detection, predictive maintenance planning, and image recognition. This allowed the client’s utility team to access specialized resources for specific data science and machine learning tasks.

Drawing on key outcomes of this project, the client can access enhancements of existing models, efficient use of operational spending, and help with specialized knowledge transfer among the client’s team.
