The Government of Yukon and City of Dawson are replacing Dawson’s aging recreation center with a new facility designed to meet the current and future needs of the community. The new recreation center will provide residents with an accessible, welcoming, and functional space for recreation, community gatherings, and territorial events.
Along with our partners, we are providing architecture and engineering services for the new recreation center, which is the first progressive design-build delivered by the Government of Yukon. Based on extensive input from the community, the center features a skating rink, curling rink, fitness room, multipurpose sports gym, indoor playground area, community kitchen, walking loop, and community programming space. The rectangular building also includes a central “social heart,” which serves as both a hub connecting the activity spaces and a welcoming gathering area with seating and food services.
Maintaining the capital and operating budgets for the new facility was critically important through building design and construction. We worked closely with the City of Dawson, Government of Yukon, and contractors to establish a building program tailored to the specific needs of the community while meeting the client’s financial requirements. We employed strategies such as emphasizing function over aesthetics and avoiding a second floor to simplify design and cost. Additionally, we designed the building to be energy efficient, utilizing materials that are durable, easy to maintain, and readily available.
As a highly visible building along the primary approach into the Dawson townsite, the new recreation center, when complete, will serve as a landmark along the Klondike Highway. It will be an accessible and inclusive place designed to enhance health, wellness, and connection for residents.
