As Calgary continues to grow, the demand on its transportation network is increasing. To help address rising traffic volumes and improve travel efficiency along one of the city's most important corridors, the Province of Alberta launched the Deerfoot Trail Improvements project—a major transportation initiative extending more than 6 miles (10 kilometres) and including significant interchange upgrades.
We served as the lead designer for the project under a design-build contract led by Aecon. The project team focused on creating a smoother, more reliable transportation experience for commuters and commercial traffic alike. Key upgrades include the addition of capacity along Deerfoot Trail, improvements to interchange entrances and exits, and modernization of infrastructure originally constructed decades ago. To maintain traffic flow, project team has carefully staged construction activities to keep vehicles moving throughout the duration of the work while minimizing disruption to the travelling public.
Among the project's notable features is the seven new bridge structures, including a new river crossing bridge, built adjacent to the existing structure. Delivering this work required careful coordination with environmental regulations governing in-water construction activities, as well as detailed planning to support ongoing traffic operations during construction.
Through innovative design, collaborative delivery, and construction support, we are proud to help transform an essential transportation corridor that serves thousands of travelers every day.
