Originally built in 1982 as a single-berth facility, Duke Point Container Terminal has evolved into a multi-purpose marine terminal handling containers, breakbulk, and bulk cargo. Increasing throughput and berth congestion drove the need for expansion to improve capacity and operational efficiency.
Our team plays a continuous role in advancing the facility, supporting the project from early planning and funding through detailed design and construction. This long-term involvement provides deep familiarity with the site, infrastructure, and operational requirements.
We supported the Nanaimo Port Authority and DP World in defining scope, master planning, engineering concepts, and cost estimates to secure funding through the National Trade Corridors Fund. Environmental planning, regulatory strategy, and Indigenous consultation support helped establish a phased expansion program.
Now serving as Engineer of Record under a design-build model with Pomerleau, our team is leading the detailed design of a piled wharf extension. The expansion adds approximately 150 metres (492 feet) of berth—bringing the total usable berth to 320 metres (1,050 feet)—and enables simultaneous berthing of barges and larger deep-sea vessels, reducing congestion and increasing throughput.
The marine structure features a suspended reinforced concrete deck supported on steel pipe piles founded in bedrock, designed to accommodate modern container handling equipment. A performance-based seismic design approach, aligned with ASCE 61, incorporates site-specific soil-structure interaction analysis to enhance resilience and operational continuity.
Our team continues to provide construction-phase engineering and certification support, helping provide safe delivery, improved constructability, and long-term reliability. Upon completion, the expanded terminal will strengthen supply chain efficiency for Vancouver Island and support sustained economic growth.
