Duravit Factory

German manufacturer Duravit chose Matane, on the shores of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, to establish their first North American plant—also the world’s first carbon-neutral (Scope 2) hygienic ceramics facility. We were selected to provide engineering services for this groundbreaking project.

Our people specialized in electrical and mechanical engineering, fire protection, telecommunications, environmental services, and water treatment joined forces to design a 35,000 square-metre (376,737 square-foot) plant powered entirely by hydroelectricity, with an estimated energy demand of 10 megawatts. Our team designed systems capable of powering 100-metre-long electric kilns, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 9,000 tons annually compared to traditional gas-fired kilns.

Our work resulted in a fully automated production cycle for Duravit’s premium bathroom products—from raw material intake to casting, molding, drying, glazing, firing, packaging, and shipping—with an annual production capacity of 450,000 ceramic pieces. This major industrial project created 240 skilled jobs and drives regional economic growth in the Gaspésie region.
