LEEDing the way to innovative electrical work and building security

The Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Courts were getting together. They were combining eight different locations into one integrated facility—33 new courtrooms operating to serve the Region of Durham. And they had to operate safely and securely.

Our team of electrical and security engineers worked to deliver a comprehensive lighting and security system that met those challenges. The system combats external and internal threats with surveillance cameras, card readers, and electric strikes (alternate locking mechanisms). Since judicial services are an essential service, we planned multiple generators to provide N+1 redundant backup and an uninterruptible power supply system.

When selecting lighting systems, we chose options that balanced security with energy performance. High-efficiency equipment and low-voltage control systems can leverage occupancy, daylight sensors, switches, and dimmers to conserve power. With these and other strategies, this courthouse was the first Ontario Government building to achieve LEED Gold certification.
