Helping deliver Canada’s largest remand centre
Stantec’s involvement with the Edmonton Remand Centre began early in the project life cycle as we helped document the owner’s design intent and developed commissioning plans. As part of the project team, our commissioning group helped deliver this new advanced remand centre—the largest in Canada—from start to finish.
For this project, our responsibilities included scheduling and planning, commissioning procedures, system installation and performance verification. We were also responsible for deficiency list tracking, integrated building systems testing, and equipment vendor coordination. The facility includes five general population pods, a segregation pod, health centre pod, a central administration building, laundry facility, and interconnecting corridors. The facility accommodates 1952 inmates, with infrastructure for three potential pods that would bring the population to 2,800 inmates and 500 staff. Achieving LEED silver certification, the new centre is complete with video courts and video visitation booths that help reduce the carbon impact for the Justice Department.
Now complete, the enhancements made to the Remand Centre serve to improve the comfort, convenience, and safety of both staff and inmates while ensuring that the facility has the flexibility to adjust should overcrowding begin to occur.
