Essex Streetscape Design

The Town of Essex wanted to reinvigorate the town’s economic core by attracting business investment and encouraging community gatherings. Also looking to honor their historic roots with a renewed streetscape, the Town engaged us to help with this multi-million-dollar initiative.

We provided multidisciplinary design services, assisted in procurement, and managed this streetscape renewal project from inception through construction. To overcome the challenge of implementing streetscape improvements while supporting continued operation of local businesses, we prepared a communication strategy and 3D photorealistic renderings to generate excitement in the community at the project outset.

We reenvisioned the downtown core to integrate flex-parking between Victoria Avenue and Laird Avenue—allowing on-street parking spaces to be used for patios and event space. The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act compliant design included traffic signal upgrades as well as flood mitigation and traffic calming measures to establish traffic flow and safe interactions with pedestrians.

Notably, our streetscape design recognizes the Town’s connections to agriculture and the historic railway. We incorporated bricks and paving stones, removeable bollards (sturdy verical protective posts), and decorative lighting and furnishings. Raised and moveable planters, tree plantings, and decorative crosswalks round out our design. Addtionally, enhanced gateway features include custom signage pillars and banner poles, to highlight the entrances into downtown.

By increasing foot traffic, encouraging investment in the downtown, and promoting community gatherings and events, this streetscape regeneration is expected to have a positive impact on Essex and local businesses. The inviting and intimate downtown atmosphere will encourage everyone of all abilities to gather and connect.
