Golden Ears Pump Station and Sanitary Sewer Overflow Tank

When it rains, sometimes it pours, and stormwater can overwhelm wastewater collection systems, so Metro  Vancouver is taking action—with a new planned wastewater treatment plant to serve the east Metro Vancouver sewerage catchments. As part of the new planned facility, Metro engaged us to design the Golden Ears pumping station and sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) tank, meeting provincial and federal government building codes as well as municipal seismic design criteria.

We completed all design work including civil, geotechnical, architectural, landscape architecture, structural, mechanical, and electrical designs. The three-story reinforced concrete pump station has a total capacity of 173 megalitres per day. Activated carbon scrubbers control odor and a standby generator can supply power for full station capacity. The partially buried SSO tank is finished with architectural precast concrete panels to reduce the scale of the large tank, Interpretive artwork by Katzie First Nation Indigenous artist Rain Pierre, and a green roof. Colored LED lighting highlights the precast panels.

With this new pumping station in place, the new facility will provide hydraulic relief of upstream sanitary sewers during wet weather events and reduce sanitary sewer overflows into the Fraser River.
