Green Hydrogen Potential Study

After the success of our May 2020 hydrogen webinar, Stantec was contacted by this confidential client to assess the hydrogen potential of a South Asian country. Determining that only 10% of its potential hydrogen power was being used, we were tasked with conducting a study to improve the country’s hydrogen potential.

The study specifically focused on increasing hydrogen production using hydropower and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction strategies. Our team looked at the mobility sector to evaluate how much energy is being used now along with the opportunity to convert the sector to hydrogen. Specifically, we assessed how much hydropower would be needed to make the conversion from hydropower to hydrogen that would eventually convert diesel and gasoline engines to hydrogen. We also assessed the amount of power required to convert all residential cooking using biomass and liquified petroleum gas to hydrogen as well as assess the potential of an ammonia plant that could produce 1,000 tons per day for export.

In conclusion, our team found that with significant investment the country’s hydrogen potential is adequate for its future vision.
