Engaging community and encouraging fitness through a new greenway

When the City of North Vancouver planned a 900 metre retrofit to the community’s seven kilometre Green Necklace Greenway, we knew exactly what was required: collaborative design with City staff, consultation with key stakeholders, community engagement, and design services to deliver a safe route adjacent to important sports fields and a secondary school.

The community engagement strategy included an on-site “sounding board,” real-time visualizations online and for meetings, an Instagram photo contest, and questionnaires vetting patterns of use and user demographics. Once the community’s needs were heard, our landscape architects, electrical, and civil engineers delivered a three metre wide route with functional alignments, utilities management, road and curb works, drainage, and lighting. We reconsidered project tendering and construction priorities to ensure that phase one construction was completed in early fall for students.

The resulting multi-use trail meets the City’s goal of providing residents and visitors a greenway for commuting to work, jogging, or simply enjoying a quiet moment
