Microgrid technology—consisting of solar, battery storage, and grid technology—reduces diesel use in a First Nations community
When Alltrade, working under an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreement with Ontario Power Generation (OPG), set out to provide a microgrid energy solution for a remote First Nations community, they asked Stantec to provide engineering services. Our job? Design the solar farm array, collection system, and tie-in to battery energy storage and the existing grid.
Gull Bay will be Canada's first fully-integrated solar energy-storage system in a remote First Nations community. Three hundred solar panels laid out over a 20-hectare site will supply 100% of the community’s energy needs during the day, while diesel power will be available nights and during the winter months.
This project replaces thousands of litres of dirty diesel fuel per year with clean energy and allows Indigenous People to play a central role in developing clean energy to meet their needs.
