Optimizing energy resource distribution and addressing evolving needs

Hosting and Loading Capacity Map Advisory Services

At the direction of a public regulator, our utility client was required to develop an externally facing hosting and loading capacity map. Prior to our engagement in the project, the utility developed an internal concept plan for the map and performed a preliminary gap analysis to assess additional data requirements to move forward. They then engaged us as a third-party reviewer to support map development.

During the project, our team reviewed the utility’s immediate and future business use cases for the map. We assessed the hosting calculation methods, the required power system planning software, and the availability of data. Additionally, we evaluated their proposed architectural solution and outlined immediate next steps for implementation.

Our team also assessed the effort’s alignment with business use cases, advising our client on their readiness for implementation from both a data and technology perspective. We then provided immediate actions for our client to undertake to move forward on an externally facing hosting and loading capacity map.

The map will act as a critical tool for the utility to facilitate the integration and optimization of distributed energy resources (DERs) within their system and respond to the evolving needs of users and other key parties.
