Cultivating passion and excitement in the community
Winnipeg has raised a number of sports heroes and all have a passion for their sport. When Jonathan Toews hoisted the Stanley Cup as the Captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, or hung the Olympic hockey gold medal around his neck, all of Winnipeg celebrated with that same passion—a passion that our Stantec Sports team shares. That’s why designing the new Fieldhouse for south Winnipeg is not just a job, but a dream job.
The Jonathan Toews Community Centre (JTCC) is home to many sports—from mini soccer, to figure skating and hockey, to adult dodge ball leagues and community baseball and basketball. The JTCC staff and managers operate a centre that is at the heart of sport in St. Vital. Knowing how important the facility already is, they have a vision to expand its reach. We’re helping them get there.
Understanding the community’s vision has been the focus of our job. Driven by a shared love of sport, we’re collaborating with the Centre to develop a multi-purpose indoor sports hall that will integrate with the existing JTCC facilities, site, and masterplan.
The new complex will include an indoor fieldhouse, athletics track, fitness area, administrative offices, dressing rooms, and a café and lobby. Volleyball and basketball are two of the fastest growing sports in Manitoba. When complete, the facility will have the ability to host national club level tournaments with the capability of seating up to 2,000 spectators for special events. It will accommodate a wide range of sports for all ages including winter baseball training, adult fitness classes, and indoor lawn bowling.
The JTCC Fieldhouse is set to become a centre of excellence for amateur sport in Manitoba where more children and adults than ever will be able to participate in active living.
