Providing sanitary capacity for the West Urban Communities

With the surrounding community expanding, the Kanata West Pumping Station (KWPS) was required to provide sanitary sewer capacity for new development and provide relief to the existing Hazeldean Pump Station. The new community will include a population of approximately 17,000 people in 6,300 households, 24,000 jobs and about 1 million square metres of commercial space.

The pump station will provide sanitary servicing up to 1250 litres per second wet weather capacity for both new and existing developments. It will serve as the primary pumping facility providing wastewater servicing for the Kanata West Concept Plan and discharge directly to the city's trunk wastewater collection system at Eagleson Road.

For this project, our role included all levels of design (including functional, preliminary, detailed design, and preparation of tender documents) for the KWPS and its associated twinned 4000-metre long forcemains, and an overflow. We also provided geotechnical, hydrogeological, natural environment, and other required site investigations for the design. Detailed calculations were completed to define the number of pumps and pumping rates over the pump’s life to provide better efficiencies and power utilization.

With the pump station and forcemain in place, Ottawa’s bright new community can continue to grow.
