Meeting the needs of the community in the Municipality of the County of Kings at a single location

Nestled in Coldbrook Village Park in Kentville, the Kings Municipal Complex spans nearly 24,000 square feet. This new facility encompasses the state-of-the-art council chamber designed so mayor, council and citizens can face each other.

The bright, double-height lobby opens to natural landscaping and a plaza with sunken planters, allowing the space to be filled with works of nature, history and art. In order to create accessible and functional space for users, all public and staff areas are barrier-free, with gender neutral washrooms, and high contrast finishes for visually impaired persons. For this project, we provided full architectural and engineering services to design and create a space that defines the community spirit and deep history. With sustainability in mind, the municipality aimed to use 15% less energy—through our strategic design, we were able to surpass this goal and achieve 30% less. This was executed through ground source heat pumps, high performance glazing, an enhanced building envelope and orientation, and efficient heat recovery system.

With a completely integrated design between our teams, we created this building as a cohesive group to achieve our client’s goals and vision for this multi-functional space.
