Modernizing an old facility to ensure a sustainable future
Rio Tinto Alcan has developed the Kitimat modernization project in collaboration with the government, businesses, and First Nations to stimulate economic opportunities benefiting the region for the next 35 to 40 years. Investing $2.7 billion in the project and the latest aluminum production technology, the facility will increase production by over 48 percent and create local employment opportunities for the region. The modernization will reduce emissions by over 50 percent becoming one of the lowest cost smelters in the world.
Our team assisted in the management and development of the permitting process. After completing an internal environmental impact assessment of the proposed project, we had a key role in attaining various environmental permits and developed environmental management plans for works in and around sensitive areas. We also supported Rio Tinto Alcan in the upgrades associated with the power generation facility in Kemano that will support the new smelter. Completing water use plans and addressing issues associated with flow management in the Kemano River were a critical part of the project.
