For the Lac Simon Anishnabe Nation, the vision was clear: create a vibrant community hub where people could stay active, connect, and celebrate life together. The resulting multifunctional sports complex now serves as a welcoming destination for residents of all generations. From initial studies to commissioning, our multidisciplinary team partnered closely with the community to help bring that vision to life.
The sports complex features a professional-caliber ice rink, locker rooms, seating for more than 450 spectators, an indoor walking and running track, and a community hall with a kitchen. Bringing these spaces together under one roof required close coordination across disciplines and innovative design solutions. To improve energy efficiency, heat recovered from the ice refrigeration system is used to warm and dehumidify the arena. The facility also incorporates a natural refrigeration system that streamlines operations and maintenance, along with hybrid glued-laminated timber and steel trusses that maximize the use of wood while reducing the overall weight of the rink structure.
Today, the multifunctional complex serves as a vibrant gathering place at the heart of the community. Residents of all ages can enjoy their favorite activities, connect with family and friends, and come together for recreation, wellness, and community events throughout the year.
