An updated area structure plan can balance economic, environmental, and community considerations
Lamont County is 2,385 square kilometres of land, home to close to 4,000 residents, and includes an abundance of industrial land full of potential. As one of five member-municipalities in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association (AIHA)—supporting Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing region—Lamont County needed to re-imagine their area structure plan (ASP) to encourage and guide development for their portion of land within the Alberta Industrial Heartland (AIH).
Our Community Development team partnered with Lamont County to update their ASP, originally approved in 2001, to provide general land-uses and policies to better align with changes in the AIH and development in neighbouring counties. Our team provided extensive engagement (including five sessions) to collect public feedback to weave into policy framework changes. We also provided concept design, environmental, servicing, and transportation work to support the planning of these key lands. The goal? Economic growth to support heavy industrial, light and medium industrial, highway, commercial, and agriculture industrial lands.
The ASP lays the framework to support future growth in a coordinated and compatible fashion that will benefit both the industry and the community—ultimately bringing jobs and population growth which will increase Lamont County’s municipal tax base.
