Laurel Creek Rehabilitation - Erb Street East to Weber Street North
Laurel Creek is a heavily urbanized creek and the most significant tributary of the Grand River within the City of Waterloo. A significant portion of the creek within Uptown Waterloo between Erb Street East and Weber Street North was beginning to fail. Businesses and private residents within the community had expressed concerns due to bank erosion threatening private property, infrastructure, and the Laurel Trail. The City reached out to us to help.
Our terrestrial and aquatic ecologists prepared a scoped environmental impact study (EIS) to characterize the significance and sensitivity of the natural features in the study area, including identifying species at risk (SAR). We also noted potential impacts of the project on identified natural features and recommended appropriate management and mitigation measures to reduce the risk of potential negative effects on migratory birds, fish, and associated habitats.
Additionally, our stream engineers, geomorphologists, geotechnical engineers, and landscape architects worked together on the rehabilitation design. We incorporated armourstone retaining walls, vegetated riverstone toe protection, wood debris toe protection, and stream bank stabilization through a native vegetation planting plan. During construction, we also managed the re-use, removal, and disposal of contaminated soils to reduce construction costs.
Now complete, the reinforced creek protects local properties, infrastructure, and crucial habitats.
