Local Transit Implementation Plan and Self-Driving Feasibility Study
Big or small, we love working with communities of any size. Through Stantec’s Greenlight fund, our team received funding to help clients determine the feasibility of—and plan for—automated shuttle implementation. One of our partners in this endeavor is the small Town of Okotoks, a suburb of 29,000.
Young families, retirees, and entrepreneurs alike are attracted to Okotoks for its proximity to Calgary, small town feel, and healthy lifestyle offerings. With the Town’s annexation of 1,950 hectares of land and mixed-used development planning underway, Okotoks is poised for intense growth. Next stop, a local transit network
While we were conducting the local transit study, the town expressed interest in supplementing the plan with a self-driving shuttle alternative. As a town that prides itself on providing a comfortable environment for all people to live, work and play, implementing an autonomous shuttle service would fit seamlessly. We conducted a detailed site analysis, stakeholder and public engagement workshops, a technical evaluation, and costing for system deployment. The result was concept plan that combines Okotoks’ transit and AV-futures.
