Marda Loop Mainstreets Master Plan

Main streets—areas where people shop, dine, find entertainment, connect, and gain a sense of community. The City of Calgary’s public realm urban initiatives group is looking to revitalize a number of its main streets, including 33 and 34 Avenues SW in Marda Loop. Our community development and transportation teams are working to make that happen.

Starting with a community engagement phase, we gained feedback from building owners and retail tenants for the future detailed design. These elements will include accessibility, integration with future residential and retail mixed-use developments, and attracting people to the area. Key to upgrading this area’s accessibility includes expanding sidewalks to make the area more walkable for pedestrians, an opportunity for more bicycle pathways, and connecting with the newly built bus rapid transit plaza. Using insight gained from stakeholders, we developed a master plan to suit the mixed-use needs of the community.

With the masterplan approved, our team is looking to set up pilot projects to test some of the design elements from the plan. These include the festival square, parkette outdoor patios for some businesses and restaurants, bike lanes, and more.
