Modernizing facilities and optimizing energy performance without disruption

McGill University’s McIntyre Medical Building comprises 323,000 square feet spread across 17 floors. Built in 1965, it houses McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine, including its cancer centre, along with pharmacology, biochemistry, and physiology departments.

The obsolescence of the existing facilities in this heritage building, with its emblematic architecture, meant a massive intervention would be needed to modernize facilities and optimize energy performance.

In addition to replacing the building’s electromechanical infrastructures, our team helped upgrade the laboratories in line with the most up-to-date biosafety standards for this kind of facility. The building renovation also entailed the refurbishment of laboratories serving the infectious diseases and biochemistry departments, as well as those of the animal unit, in compliance with Health Canada biosafety level 2 (BSL2) standards, thereby necessitating the replacement of more than 80 laboratory hoods. The laboratories also achieved ISO 7 certification, as per the standard applicable to cleanroom dust quantities.

Our greatest challenge was to keep research and teaching activities going during the works. The project was carried out in several stages, with a very tight schedule, so as to limit interruptions in the university’s operations.
