Metrolinx Transit-Oriented Communities Playbook

When your client asks you to develop a playbook to guide developers in their complex and ambitious community building vision, you play with a Rubik’s Cube! Working with Metrolinx, Infrastructure Ontario, and other stakeholders, our team helped create ‘Transit-Oriented Communities: Design Guidelines for Subway Stations Integrated within Development’ to offer guidance around land-use planning, development, and transit infrastructure integration.

This transit-oriented community (TOC) playbook is a developer’s guide for creating synergies between subway stations and developments to create complete communities. As new subway lines and line extensions emerge, a one-size-fits-all approach to development will not work. We utilized a Rubik’s Cube to represent each site and showcase the technical interfaces and strategic considerations. Providing flexibility and adaptability, this concept will help optimize the integration between community, mobility, and the public realm.

The guidance contained within the playbook is meant to inspire the industry as well as the communities as Metrolinx works toward transit-oriented communities. This living document will change and improve with ongoing engagement to inform best practices and policies from the local and global TOC marketplace.
