For their new municipal transformer station (MTS), our utility client set an ambitious objective to develop a facility targeting net near zero carbon emissions. From the earliest planning stages, our Power Delivery team has been working closely with them to help turn that vision into reality.
Achieving this low-carbon target required innovation in both design approach and equipment selection. We completed a comprehensive 60-year life cycle assessment (LCA) comparing the proposed low-carbon substation concept against a traditional substation design. Concurrently, we conducted a life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) to evaluate the long-term economic benefits of the sustainable design strategies considered.
We evaluated several embodied carbon reduction strategies as part of this process. These included procurement of an ester oil–based power transformer instead of a conventional mineral oil transformer, use of an alternative geofabric-based containment system in place of traditional concrete containment, and adoption of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)-free switchgear and circuit breakers We also considered the selection of lower-carbon construction materials, which included reduced-carbon concrete and optimized steel use where design conditions permitted.
Based on the assessment results and site-specific conditions, our team incorporated multiple strategies into the final design, reducing the overall carbon footprint of the 230/27.6-kilovolt substation. Throughout construction, we will continue to conduct sustainability assessments to identify additional carbon reduction and offset opportunities to further support the project’s net near zero objectives.
Once operational, the new MTS will help deliver reliable electricity to Ontario communities while reducing its environmental impact.
