NextStar Energy is a joint venture between LG and Stellantis aimed at transforming the North American electric vehicle (EV) industry. They have invested in building a lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility in Windsor, Ontario. Their design-builder—Alberici in a joint venture with Barton Malow—engaged Gresham Smith and Stantec as part of the team to provide mechanical, electrical, fire protection, structural and civil engineering services for this project.
Offering more than 4.5 million square feet (418,064 square metres) of manufacturing space, the site includes the Cell Building, which covers 2.7 million square feet (250,838 square metres), and the Module Building, which occupies 445,000 square feet (41,342 square metres). In addition to these structures, we also provided mechanical and electrical engineering design for a master substation and switchyard, a safety building, waste storage and treatment areas, and administrative offices. We also worked on the central electrolyte supply, solvent recovery and purification, and exhaust gas recovery systems.
Capable of producing over 49 gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery capacity per year, NextStar Energy’s facility provides a bold step toward a more sustainable future in Canada’s energy sector.
