North Central LRT Phase 1: Concept Study

We worked alongside key stakeholders and community groups to develop context-sensitive solutions and balanced trade-offs to integrate low floor urban LRT into Calgary’s communities. The concepts developed assessed the impacts of at-grade, below-grade, and above-grade options along different segments of various proposed corridors. Initially, the project started focusing on the comparison of Edmonton Trail, Centre Street, and Nose Creek. But through public engagement, 4 Street NW was also added to the evaluations.

Each of the options was evaluated using a non-weighted high level Multiple Accounts Evaluation (MAE). The high-level MAE resulted in the selection of Centre Street and Edmonton Trail for further evaluation under a more detailed analysis. The MAE developed was designed to consider the trade-offs between capital cost, travel times, land acquisition impacts, alignment with City policies, community redevelopment through transit oriented development (TOD), social impacts, and environmental impacts.

The result? The selection of Centre Street as the final corridor for the extension of the Green Line to north central Calgary, and for the progression of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for the Centre Street Transitway.
